Who We Are

NNLB is a collective of leaders who work to address the needs of Black people at all intersections of gender, ethnicity, social and economic class. We are dedicated to the following.:

Black Liberation

“If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.” Our work centers on liberating all Black lives as Black women fighting for the uplift of our collective community.

Direct Reparations

Black people have been systematically robbed. They have been denied the right to their bodies; separated from their siblings, spouses, and children; and forced to work for free. Reparations are about seeking justice for that which was stolen and paying a debt long overdue. We believe in reparations for Black Americans and their descendants from chattel slavery and beyond.

Abolition

The legacy of slavery — and the centuries of theft it entails — does not dwell in the long-forgotten past for Black people. We know that abolition and creating a world where real abolition exists will takes time. We are fighting to end the enslavement of Black people everywhere.

Decriminalization Of Poverty

The criminalization of poor people happens at the intersectional oppressions of race, class, gender, and gender identity.  Black people are more likely to be targeted, profiled, fined, arrested, harassed, violated, and incarcerated than others groups. We are fighting to change this system that intentionally criminalizes Black people.

Our Future

We require sustainable funding in it;s future to expand our movement work and the machine behind it’s mission. We are currently looking for another fiscal sponsor to assist us in expanding our organization’s outreach and to help support the following insitaives.

Policy & Research

We will like to advance the role of our policy and research initiatives to advance leading a Black policy agenda in New York State.

Mentorship

We at NNLB would like to expand our mentorship services working with other upcoming organizations and activists with our community.

Coalition Building

We want to expand our capacity to work alongside different coalition groups that address Black issues.

Secure Funds

We have operated for a while on limited financial resources and understand that having financial security is essential to our organization’s growth and meeting our community’s needs.

Our Work

Since our founding in 2020, to move the baton of movement work forward, we aim to not only educate on how Black bodies are affected by institutional and structural oppression but also offer deliberate solutions to movement leaders who are working to dismantle such systems. Here’s a rundown of our work and the projects we’ve supported:

New York State Breathe Act Survey

Through the Black Freedom Project, NNLB in partnership with other Black-led organizations distributed a community survey to Black residents in Albany County on the increased investment in policing and how it affects the Black community. The survey exists to help inform a Statewide campaign to pass the Breathe Act in New York State and strengthen Black organizing capacity throughout New York.

Social Justice through Digital Education

We develop content for our digital education initiatives including but not limited to our core issues. We also support developing educational content for other social justice leaders and organizations.

Servicing Statewide and National Campaigns

We have helped to elevate campaigns in New York State and beyond that work to improve the status of Black lives and advance social justice. We contribute to these efforts in several ways by uplifting digital messages, serving on the ground, and providing analyst support to policies directly shaping our communities.

Leading through Economic Justice

Mutual Aid (2020-2022). Through fundraising initiatives with reparationists who support and prioritize addressing the immediate needs of individuals in our community, NNLB provided mutual aid to our community for two years. More than $250,000 worth of unrestricted cash grants have been given out. To date, we have used what we learned from our work in mutual aid to advocate for effective policy initiatives in economic justice for Black people.
