Meet The Need

What is “Meet the Need”?

In 2023, NNLB United was granted a wellness grant on behalf of Health Research, Inc. (HRI) and The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) to achieve outcomes for a project with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) entitled, National Initiative to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities Among Populations at High-Risk and Underserved, Including Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations and Rural Communities.

This grant aims to enhance existing or develop new programs that address social determinants of health for targeted populations and promote COVID-19 Health Literacy to the participants of these programs and the community at large through a trauma-informed lens. NNLB’s program serving Monroe County, titled “Meet the Need,” serve as a series of digital education and community event focused on poverty, inequity, root causes, and how we disrupt them.

Poverty is a systemic issue requiring policy solutions.

Meet the Need” aims to address poverty as a policy problem, recognizing that poverty is not an individual issue but a systemic issue requiring policy solutions. The program will work to decolonize how we look at poverty in our society and how policy is essential to addressing the root causes of poverty, such as income inequality, lack of affordable housing, and limited access to education and healthcare.

The program will advocate for policies increasing access to resources and supporting impoverished individuals and families. Additionally, the program will highlight policies and practices that perpetuate poverty, such as discriminatory hiring practices and unequal access to resources.
